Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 4 December 2011

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ll do some remembering, give it to you straight from the shoulder, and celebrate a number of birthdays.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Remember

I got a nice email from longtime listener Marshall, requesting “Will You Remember Me?” by Harry Richman, so let’s remember a few more things…

Remember Me – Ray Starita and His Ambassadors Band / Lou Abelardo, v
Remember I Love You – Jimmy McHugh’s Bostonians (Cr. Sunny Clapp and His Band o’ Sunshine) / Claude Reese, v
Will You Remember Me – Harry Richman
You’re So Easy To Remember – Abe Lyman AHO / Phil, Neely, v.

Segment 2: Shoulder
In 2003 we had a shoulder segment to help my friend’s speedy recovery after surgery, now in 2011 he’s had his whole shoulder replaced. Speedy recovery Charlie, but please, if you injure yourself again, make it a different body part. There are only so many vintage songs about shoulders, y’know.

You Can’t Cry Over My Shoulder – Park Lane Orchestra / Vaughn De Leath, v.
Shake Your Little Shoulder – The Happy Six
There’s A Rainbow ‘Round My Shoulder – Golden Gate Orchestra
Straight From The Shoulder – Richard Himber and His Ritz Carlton Orchestra / Joey Nash, v.

Segment 3: Composers Birthdays

A number of vintage composers had birthdays this past week, so for the next two segments, we’ll spotlight as many of them as possible. For this segment, we’ll feature all composers,

On The Mississippi – Prince’s Band [Composer: Harry Carroll]
Love Nest – Paul Whiteman AHO
[Composer: Louis A. Hirsch]
Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries – Ben Bernie AHO / Ben Bernie & Manny Prager, v.
[Composer: Ray Henderson]
Whistling In The Dark – The Rhythmic Troubadours (Dir. Stan Greening) / Leslie Holmes, v.
[Composer: Dana Suesse]

Segment 4: Artist Birthdays
Although long gone, we can celebrate some of the vintage artists who would’ve celebrated their birthdays this week; Frank Black in 1896, Boyd Senter in 1898 and Lew Reynolds in 1896.

Under The Moon – Frank Black AHO / Unidentified, v.
Copenhagen – Boyd Senter and His Senterpedes
Headin’ For Better Times – Lew Reynolds Flexo Recording Orchestra

Segment 5: Writers Birthdays
Just a couple more birthday shout outs – Larry Conley, who was born in 1895, and Charles Leslie Johnson who was born in 1876.

A Little Bit Bad – George Olsen and His Music / Fran Frey, v. [written by Benny Davis, Al Eldridge and Larry Conley]
Porcupine Rag – Prince’s Orchestra [written by Charles Leslie Johnson]
