Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 9 May 2010

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re gonna break a leg, get swamped, play some stuff, and celebrate the birthday of Harry Lillis Crosby.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Havan
I have a correction to make. Last week, I played “Havana” by George Hamilton Green’s Star Trio. I announced it as having been written by John Schonberger and Abe Lyman Well, they did write “Havana”, just not that Havana. The “Havana” I played last week was from 1927 and was composed by Raymond B. Egan and Vincent Rose. I had both songs listed and misread my notes, here’s the 1923 Schongerger/Lyman version:

Havana – Max Terr Orchestra

Segment 2: Legs

Frog Legs – Columbia Saxophone Sextet
Breakin’ A Leg – Nick Nichols AHO (Cr. Rhythm Syncopators) / Unknown, v.
Peg Leg Stomp – Hal Kemp AHO

Segment 3: Swamp

Swamp Blues – The Little Ramblers
Swampy River – Duke Ellington, Piano
Big Ben – Bennett’s Swamplanders

Segment 4: Bing Crosby
May 3, marked the birth in Tacoma, Washington in 1903 of Harry Lillis Crosby, better known as “Bing”.

Make Believe – Paul Whiteman AHO / Bing Crosby, v.
It Must Be True – Gus Arnheim and His Orchestra / Bing Crosby, v.
Susiana – Sam Lanin’s Famous Players and Singers / Bing Crosby, v.

Segment 5: Stuff

Stomp Your Stuff – State Street Ramblers
Hot Stuff – Oliver Cobb and His Rhythm Kings / Oliver Cobb, v.
Stuff – Paul Howard’s Quality Serenaders / Lionel Hampton, v.
