Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Henry Hall, J. Fred Coots and Bing, go wigwammin, and take a musical trip to Araby.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Henry Hall
I received a nice email a couple of weeks ago from listener Alister in Glasgow, Scotland, reminding me that yesterday, May 2, in 1898 was Henry Hall’s birthday. Alister used to be a broadcast engineer for the BBC in Scotland and remarked that nearly every studio had a copy of “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” near the turntables to use as a test record.

It’s Just The Time For Dancing – The New BBC Dance Orchestra Dir, by Henry Hall / Val Rosing, v.
Teddy Bear’s Picnic – Val Rosing, v.
Here’s To The Next Time – Val Rosing, v.

Segment 5: Wigwam
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that in 1924, Lou Gold and His Orchestra were appearing at the Club Wigwam in New York. That, and the fact that I live not far from one of the famous “Wigwam Motels” on Route 66, got me to looking for rapidly rotating records about wigwams, and you what? I found some!

Wigwam Blues – Mound City Blue Blowers
Big Wig At The Wigwam – Woody Herman AHO / Mary Ann McCall
Wigwammin – Red Norvo AHO / Mildred Bailey, v.

Segment 2: Araby
We’re taking a musical trip to Araby – the million or so square miles of desert plateau between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.

That Night In Araby – Edwin J. McEnelly’s Orchestra / Henry Burr, v.
In Harlem’s Araby – Adrian Schubert’s Dance Orch. (Dubin’s Dandies) / Jack Kaufman, v.
In Araby With You – Nat Shilkret & Victor Orch.
Arabianna – S. S. Leviathan Orch

Segment 3: J. Fred Coots
May 2 marked the birth in 1897 in New York City of composer John Frederick Coots, better known as J. Fred Coots.

Doin’ The Racoon – The Knickerbockers (Ben Selvin)
It Was The Dawn Of Love – Paul Whiteman AHO / Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, Charles Gaylord, Young / Bing Crosby, whistles
I’m Always In The Mood For You – Fats Waller and His Rhythm / Fats Waller, v.
I’m That Way Over You – Ray Starita and His Ambassadors Band

Segment 4: Bing Crosby
Listener Art wanted to hear some “early” Bing, and coincidentally, May 3, marks the birth in Tacoma, Washington in 1903 of Harry Lillis Crosby, better known as “Bing”.

I’ve Got The Girl – Don Clark and His Hotel Biltmore Orchestra / Bing Crosby & Al Rinker, v.
Wistful And Blue – Paul Whiteman AHO / Bing Crosby & Al Rinker, v.
Muddy Water – Paul Whiteman AHO / Bing Crosby, v.
