Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 29 March 2009

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s “happy-go-lucky” show, we’ll see what we ain’t got, listen to some duplicates and hear some songs by Redmond Farrar.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Redmond Farrar
No, it’s not his birthday, but I played a song Redmond Farrar composed last week and I wanted to learn a little more. He was apparently a staff composer for the Regal Record Company and wrote or co-wrote a number of songs, including these:

They Don’t Come Better Than Betty – Billy James’ Dance Orchestra / Unidentified v.
That’s My Idea – Adrian Schubert’s Dance Orch (Cr. Matty Crawford’s Orch)
Yearning – Adrian Schubert’s Dance Orchestra

Segment 2: Duplicates
The next two segments of the show are duplicates. That is, this segment I’m going to play three songs, and next segment, play three completely different tunes, but with the same titles.

I Ain’t Got Nobody – Coon-Sanders Orchestra / Joe Sanders & Carlton Coon
Learn To Croon – Don Bestor AHO / Maurice Cross, v.
I Never Knew – Ross Gorman Orchestra (Ted FioRito / Gus Kahn)

Segment 3: Deja Vu

I Ain’t Got Nobody – Art Kahn AHO
Learn To Croon – Ben Selvin AHO / Helen Rowland, Paul Small, v.
I Never Knew – Gene Rodemich AHO

Segment 4: Lucky Lucky Lucky
Listener Leah from Chicago heard the ID in the middle of the show with “Happy Go Lucky Lane” as the background music. Leah and Mike are part of Chicago’s Premier sweet and hot jazz band, the West End Jazz Band, and although “Happy Go Lucky Lane” is in the band’s repertoire, Leah didn’t recognize the recording, and requested to hear it in its entirety. So, here for Leah and Mike, is Bob Treaster with Johnny Johnson and His Statler Pennsylvanians. You can find out more about the West End Jazz Band, their appearances and their recordings at www.westendjazzband.com.

Happy Go Lucky Lane – Johnny Johnson ah Statler Pennsylvanians / Bob Treaster, v.
Happy Go Lucky You – Midnight Minstrels (Debroy Somers) / Dan Donovan, v.
Back Again (To Happy-Go-Lucky Days) – Ray Noble AHO / Al Bowlly, v.
(I’m With You) Right Or Wrong – Joe Haymes AHO / Barry McKinley, v.

Segment 5: Ain’t Got

I Ain’t Got Nobody To Love – Bennie Krueger AHO
We Ain’t Got Nothin’ To Lose – Bert Firman and The Rhythmic Eight
You Ain’t Got Nothin’ I Want – Mound City Blue Blowers (Red McKenzie, comb / Dick Slevin, kazoo / Jack Bland, banjo)
He Ain’t Got Rhythm – Nat Gonella and His Georgians / Nat Gonella, v.
