Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 11 January 2009

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re gonna go flying, throw some stuff, celebrate the birthday of Arthur Johnston and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Flying
Did you know that we’ve traveled musically by ship, by rail and most recently by car, but that we’ve never flown anywhere? Listener Rich in Illinois noticed, and so inspired this set.

Me And Jane In A Plane – Debroy Somers Band / Fred Austin, v.
Fly Away To Ioway – Ted FioRito AHO / The Debutantes, v.
I’ll Fly To Hawaii – Cole McElroy’s Spanish Ballroom Orchestra / George Eichhord & Myer Alexander, v.
Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss – Frank Blevins and His Tar Heel Rattlers / Frank Blevins, v.

Segment 2: Throw Down
“Current” may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of this show – but we’re certainly up with current affairs. You’ve no doubt seen the video of the journalist in Iraq throwing his shoes at the President. All of the late night comedians have taken advantage of that incident, and we’re gonna get into the act as well, by playing a set of rapidly rotating records about throwing stuff.

The “Throw Down” Blues – The Ambassadors
Throw Another Log On The Fire – George Olsen and His Music / Joe Morrison, v.
Throw Me In The Alley – Peetie Wheatstraw and His Blue Blowers
Throwing Stones At The Sun – Hal Davis AHO / Dick Robertson, v.

Segment 3: What if you…

If You Do What You Do – Abe Lyman’s California Ambassador Hotel Orchestra
If You Don’t Want To Be Sweethearts – Gus Arnheim and his Coconut Grove Orchestra / Meri Bell, v.
If You Don’t Love Me – Johnny Hamp and His KY Serenaders

Segment 4: Arthur Johnston
January 10 marked the birth in 1898 in New York City of composer Arthur Johnston.

Just One More Chance – Percival Mackey Band
Moonstruck – Don Bestor AHO / Maurice Cross, v.
The Spell Of The Blues – Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians

Segment 5: This Week in Recording History
Celebrating the birthday of a few songs that were recorded this week, back in the ’20s.

I Want Somebody To Cheer Me Up – Fletcher Henderson AHO (January 6, 1926)
How About Me? – Paul Whiteman AHO / Austin Young, v.
(January 11, 1929)
Sentimental Baby – Arcadians Dance Orchestra (Dir. John Firman) / Maurice Elwin, v.
(January 9, 1929)
