Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 30 November 2008

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Louis Hirsch and Frank Black, visit Chicago, play some records for no particular reason and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Pat’s Chicago
This past week I had the great pleasure to meet in person listener Pat, who was out here in California visiting a mutual friend. I thought it would be nice to do a segment of the show for her, and since Pat is an illustrator, I thought songs about drawing would be nice, but I wasn’t coming up with much on that subject, so, since Pat is from Chicago, here, instead, is a set of rapidly rotating records about “The Windy City”.

Chicago Rhythm – Jimmie Nonne’s Apex Club Orch
Chicago – The Georgians
Chicago Blues – The Bucktown Five
Chicago Breakdown – Louis Armstrong and His Stompers

Segment 2: Frank Black
November 28 marked the birth in 1896 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of pianist, bandleader and orchestra conductor Frank Black.

The Varsity Drag – Frank Black AHO / Franklynn Baur, v.
Under the Moon – Frank Black AHO
Beside a Lazy Stream – Frank Black AHO / Scrappy Lambert, v.

Segment 3: For No Particular Reason
We’re play rapidly rotating records we’ve come across while compiling this week’s show, which don’t necessarily fit a particular segment, but are nonetheless interesting, or otherwise warrant sharing.

Don’t Be Angry With Me – Percival Mackey and His Kit-Kat Band / Miss Dickie Dixon
It’s A Million To One You’re In Love – Original London Radio Dance Band
Highways Are Happy Ways – Stan Greening (The Lido Dance Orchestra) / John Thorne, v.

Segment 4: Louis A. Hirsch
November 28 marked the birth in 1887 in New York of composer, arranger and pianist Louis A. Hirsch.

Sixty Seconds Every Minute – Jay C. Flippen AH Hot Combination
Love Nest – Art Hickman’s Orchestra
The Gaby Glide – Billy Murray

Segment 5: This Week in Recording History
Playing rapidly rotating records celebrating birthdays, having been recorded this past week in years past.
