Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 9 November 2008

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Phil Spitalny, Harry M. Woods, and Gus Kahn, and listen to some songs about money.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Congratulations Steven & Angie
Steven (son of listener Rich from Illinois) and his fiancé Angie are getting married. As music majors the tables at the bridal shower will be decorated with old sheet music, which inspired Rich to ask about recordings of some of the more obscure songs they had come across. Unfortunately, I didn’t have recordings of any of the songs on Rich’s list, but I have put together some other songs in the same vein, so with best wishes to Steven and Angie, here’s some great songs:

She’s My Sweet Patootie – The Six Black Diamonds (Adrian Schubert) / Jack Kaufman, v.
Any Little Girl That’s A Nice Little Girl Is The Right Little Girl For Me – Billy Murray
How A Little Girl Like You Could Love Me – Wally Edwards AHO/ Wally Edwards, v.
Sweet Patootie – Triangle Harmony Boys

Segment 2: Phil Spitalny
November 7 marked the birth in 1890 in Odessa, Russia of bandleader Phil Spitalny.

I Want To Meander In The Meadow – Phil Spitalny’s Music
What’s The Use? – Phil Spitalny’s Music / Bill Coty
Rippin’ It Off – Phil Spitalny AHO

Segment 3: Gus Kahn
November 6th marked the birth in Coblenz, Germany of lyricist Gus Kahn.

That Certain Party – Jack Hylton
I’ll See You In My Dreams – Ray Miller’s Orch Dir by Isham Jones / Frank Bessinger, v.
Charley My Boy – Billy Murray

Segment 4: Harry McGregor Woods
November 4 marked the birth in 1896 in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts of composer, lyricist and pianist Harry McGregor Woods.

All Of The Time – Edwin J. McEnelly’s Orchestra
Linger A Little Longer In The Twilight – Ruth Etting
Since I Found You – Sam Lanin ah Dance Orch / Irving Kaufman, v.

Segment 5: Money
The hot topic these days is the global economic situation. I hope it hasn’t directly or severely affected you, but for the last segment of the show, we’ve got some rapidly rotating records having to do with money.

Money Blues – Fletcher Henderson
My Money Never Runs Out – Banjo Joe
Cash Money Blues – Kaiser Clifton
Are You Makin’ Any Money? – Chick Bullock’s Levee Loungers
