Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 31 August 2008

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

Tomorrow being Labor Day here in the US, this evening’s show is going to be all rapidly rotating records having to do with work. Celebrating the social and economic achievements of American workers since June 28, 1894, when Congress made the first Monday in September a legal holiday.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Working

Where Do You Work-a John – Harry Reser’s Six Jumping Jacks / Tom Stacks, v.
I’m Watching The Clock – King Oliver and His Dixie Syncopators
Nice Work If You Can Get It – Tommy Dorsey and His Clambake Seven
I’m an Unemployed Sweetheart – Ben Selvin

Segment 2: Bosses
Continuing this special Labor Day edition of the show, unless you’re self-employed, you’ve probably got a boss, so here’s a set of rapidly rotating records about bosses.

Yes, Sir, Boss – Arcadian Serenaders
I’ve Got My Captain Working For Me Now – Fred Hillebrand
Sassin’ The Boss – Jimmy Lunceford AHO

Segment 3: Lazy
I said at the beginning that this was going to be an “all work” show, but “all work and no play” as they say, so this segment, we’re going to get lazy.

Lazy – The Brox Sisters
Too Tired – Adrian Rollini and the Golden Gate Orchestra
Loafin’ Time – Fats Waller and His Rhythm
Lazy Blues – Art Landry AHO

Segment 4: Whistle
Well, if you have to work, you can at least try to make it as pleasant as possible and one way to do that is to whistle while you work.

Whistle While You Work – Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians / Vocal Trio
Ain’t No Use Working So Hard – Carolina Tar Heels / Dock Walsh and Gwen Foster, v.
Workingman Blues – King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band

Segment 5: Still Working
We’re sadly at the final segment of this special Labor Day edition of Rapidly Rotating Records, but it hasn’t been at all like work really.

I Gotta Get Up And Go To Work – Adrian Rollini AHO / Red McKenzie, v.
Gotta Go To Work Again – Ted Wallace AHO
Hey Pop, I Don’t Wanna Go To Work – Kay Kyser AHO
Work Ox Blues – Texas Alexander
