Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 6 July 2008

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ll play a guessing game, fulfill a request, go to the beach and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Guessing Game
This past Wednesday evening, I had the great pleasure of attending the final screening of this years “Last Remaining Seats” film series, sponsored by the Los Angeles Conservancy. This screening took place at the beautifully restored Orpheum Theater, and featured three silent films with Robert Israel accompanying them on the Orpheum’s mighty Wurlitzer. See if you can figure out from the following records what the films were.

Hot Bricks – Jack Payne’s BBC Dance Orchestra
Asleep In The Deep – The Mills Brothers
Get Out And Get Under – Billy Murray

Segment 2: Ethel Waters
I had a request From Barbara Sunday for a set by Ethel Waters that I’m pleased to be able to fulfill. Bobb Lynes and Barbara Sunday are hosts of the old time radio program, Don’t Touch That Dial. It’s heard the first Monday of each month at midnight on KPFK FM 90.7 in Los Angeles. It can also be heard streaming online at KPFK.org.

Jersey Walk – Ethel Waters
Smile – Ethel Waters
Guess Who’s In Town – Ethel Waters

Segment 3: A Day At The Beach
As you’re listening to this show, I’m actually on vacation, lounging on the sand at Hermosa Beach. So here are a couple of sets of rapidly rotating records about the sea.

By The Sapphire Sea – Isham Jones
Seaside Polka – Henry Ford’s Old Time Dance Orchestra
Oh Come And Sit Beside The Sea – Bernie Krueger / Fran Frey, v.
South Sea Isles – Rudy Wiedoeft’s Californians

Segment 4: More Seaside Songs

That Night Beside The Sea With You – Sleepy Hall & His Collegians
Song Of The Sea – Ray Ventura ah Collegians
Deep Blue Sea Blues – Goofus Five

Segment 5: This Week in Recording History

Someday Soon – Piccadilly Players – (July 2, 1929)
Then We Canoe-Oodle Along – Ed Smalle & Jerry Macy –
(July 3, 1929)
Good Feeling Blues – Bud Spaights’ Harmony Boys
(July 3, 1930)
