Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 27 April 2008

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthday of Gene Rodemich, have some vocabulary lessons, and celebrate National Poetry Month.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Canorous
Canorous is an adjective meaning richly melodious or tuneful, and here to start off this evening’s show are some truly canorous songs.

I Am The Words, You Are The Melody – Ben Selvin AHO / Irving Kaufman, v.
Melody for Violin and Piano in A Major – Rudy Wiedoeft / Oscar Levant, piano
My Syncopated Melody Man – Marion Harris
Mississippi Melody – Debroy Somers Band

Segment 2: Nicitate
The next word in this evening’s vocabulary lesson is nictitate – a verb meaning to wink, blink, or briefly shut the eyes. I was surprised the other night when, after I had put this segment in the playlist, nictitate appeared in a Jeopardy answer.

In Blinky Winky Chinky Chinatown – Vic Berton / Chick Bullock
I Never Slept A Wink Last Night – Vincent Lopez ah St. Regis Hotel Orch
Blinky Moon Bay – Volunteer Firemen / Al Bernard / Fran Kamplaign, v.

Segment 3: Vibrissa
Interestingly, this next word in our vocabulary less also appeared in a clue on Jeopardy last week, and on the same show as nictitate. The word is vibrissa. A vibrissa is a whisker, or long stiff hair, usually used for tactile sensation, growing around the snout or brow of most mammals, like kitties.

The Cat’s Whiskers – Patt Patterson and His Champion Pep Riders
The Wind Blew Through His Whiskers – Harry Reser’s Six Jumping Jacks / Tom Stacks, v.
Does Santa Claus Sleep With His Whiskers Over Or Under The Sheets? – Jack Jackson AHO

Segment 4: Gene Rodemich
April 13 marked the birth in 1890 in St. Louis of Gene Rodemich.

Tia Juana – Gene Rodemich’s Orchestra
Tenth Interval Rag – Gene Rodemich’s Orchestra
Choo Choo (Gotta Hurry Home) – Gene Rodemich’s Orchestra

Segment 5: Poetry and Spoken Words
April is National Poetry Month, the purpose of which is to introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry, to make poetry a more important part of the school curriculum, and to bring poets and poetry to the public through posters, readings, publicity and educational resources.

I was in Sacramento for a business meeting, after which, I had some time which I put to good use by visiting Brooks Novelty Antiques and Records in Old Town Sacramento and stumbled across a recording from one of the most prominent performer’s of spoken word recordings – elocutionist Harry E. Humphrey.

Mr. Hop Toad – Harry E. Humphrey

Segment 6: For No Particular Reason
In the time remaining, here, for no particular reason, are a couple of records I came across while putting this show together.

Roller Skates – George Olsen and His Music / Bob Rice, Jack Gifford, Bob Borger, v.
Take Your Time – Jabbo Smith’s Rhythm Aces
Birdie – Bert Dolan’s Chateau Orchestra / Frank Nichols, (Arthur Hall) v.
