Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 25 November 2007

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll listen to some rags, fulfill some requests, and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Rag
Scott Joplin’s date of birth is often cited as November 24, 1868 yet according to the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Foundation, that date is not correct, and we don’t really know exactly when or where Joplin was born. But let’s celebrate Joplin’s birthday with some rags anyway.

Maple Leaf Rag – Halfway House Orchestra
Kater Street Rag – Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra
Bugle Call Rag – Abe Lyman
Cannon Ball Rag – Ben Bernie

Segment 2: Rainbows
For no particular reason, here’s a set of rapidly rotating records about rainbows.

Pretty Little Rainbow – Wewidoeft / George Hamilton Green
Reach Out For A Rainbow – Earl Burtnett
The Rainbow Man – The Rounder (Reser) / Smith Ballew, v.

Segment 3: Peanuts
Listener Jack in Oldham, England sent an email last week requesting “The Peanut Vendor”, by Jack Payne. So here for listener Jack is a set of peanut songs.

Hot Roasted Peanuts – Gene Rodemich’s Orchestra / Vocal Duet
Peanut Vendor – Jack Payne and His BBC Dance Orch / Jack Payne, Bob Busby & Bob Manning, v.
Throwing Peanuts to the Moon – Brian Lawrance and His Lansdowne Orchestra

Segment 4: Girls Names
Listener Marty from up in the San Francisco Bay area sent a nice email requesting “Lila”, in honor of his mother, inspiring this medley based on the names of girls.

Lila – Bill Hawley & Puss Donahoo
Lily – Ted Lewis and His Band
Liza – Ipana Troubadors (Sam Lanin) / Scrappy Lambert, v.
Don’t Bring Lulu – Nathan Glantz AHO / Chick Straun, v.

Sweet Thing – Fletcher Henderson AHO / June Cole, v.
(November 19, 1926)
