Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 4 November 2007

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Marry M. Woods and B. A. Rolfe, fulfill a request, correct a request and get all dressed up.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Harry M. Woods
November 4, 1896 marked the birth in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts of composer, lyricist and pianist Harry McGregor Woods.

I’m Riding To Glory – The Piccadilly Players
We’ll All Go Riding On A Rainbow – Jay Wilbur and His Band
Side By Side – Ipana Troubadors / Lester O’Keefe, v.

Segment 2: Paul Ash
Listeners Leah and Mike Bezin, of Chicago’s premiere sweet and hot jazz band, the West End Jazz Band, sent an email requesting that we feature bandleader Paul Ash. That seems like an excellent idea.

You Don’t Like It, Not Much – Paul Ash
But I Do, You Know I Do – Paul Ash
Precious – Paul Ash AHO / Paul Ash, v.

Segment 3: B A Rolfe
B. A. Rolfe’s birthday was October 24, last week we had a special Halloween show, so for listener Richard, we’re going to celebrate the birthday of Benjamin Adolphus Rolfe, or “Benny”, who was born in Brasher Falls, New York.

Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love) – B. A. Rolfe and His Lucky Strike Orchestra
Pell Street Bells – B. A. Rolfe and His Lucky Strike Orchestra
No Parking – B. A. Rolfe (Trumpet Virtuoso) and His Palais D’Or Orch

Segment 4: Top Hat
My long time friend, Don, has recently acquired a fine vintage evening dress, including a fine silk top hat – if he gets invited to a state dinner, he’s all set. So here for Don is Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra and a medley of tunes from the 1935 Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers picture, “Top Hat”.

Top Hat Medley, Part 1
Top Hat Medley, Part 2

Segment 5: Gone
A couple of weeks ago I had a request for “Gone” written in 1930 by Fats Waller, Andy Razaf and Harry Link and I played “Gone” performed by Abe Lyman and His California Orchestra. Unfortunately, the version I played was not the tune written by Waller. I don’t know who wrote the version I played, but I am now going to play Fats’ tune, played by Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra.

Gone – Nat Shilkret and The Victor Orchestra
After You’ve Gone – Golden Gate Orchestra
Where Has Mammy Gone – Adrian Schubert’s Dance Orchestra
Just Gone – King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band
