Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 24 September 2006

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Don Bestor and Fred Ahlert, fulfill a couple of requests and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Russian Style
Last week, I played a set of songs for listener Ron for his friend, Sally. Coming up with songs with “Sally” in the title was easy, but Ron has another friend, whose name is Ilja. Well, I don’t know of *any* songs with “Ilja” in the title, let alone any “vintage” songs, but, for Ilja, being of Russian descent, here’s a set of – are you ready for this? – Russian Rapidly Rotating Records.

Russian Rose – Broadway Dance Orchestra
Russian Lullaby – Roger Wolfe Kahn AHO
When Sonia Danced in Russian Style – Comedian Harmonists

Segment 2: Don Bestor
September 23 marked the birth in 1889 in Langford, South Dakota of bandleader Don Bestor.

Summer Nights – Don Bestor AHO
Gather Lip Rouge While You May – Don Bestor AHO / Florence Case, v.
‘Long About Sundown – Don Bestor AHO / Maurice Cross, v.

Segment 3: Fred Ahlert
September 19 marked the birth in 1892 in New York City of composer Fred Ahlert,

The Whole Darn Thing’s For You – Ben Selvin AHO
I Don’t Know Why – I Just Do – Layton & Johnstone
The Free and Easy – Sam Lanin AHO / Cr. High Hat Revellers / Frank Luther, v.

Segment 4: Bennie Krueger
Listener Alvin sent a request for “Gosh Darn” by Bennie Krueger and His Orchestra. In addition to leading a band, Bennie was also a sideman, and a composer. So here’s a segment dedicated to the several facets of Bennie Krueger.

Sweet Mama (Papa’s Gettin’ Mad) – Original Dixieland Jazz Band
Gosh Darn – Bennie Krueger AHO / Dick Robertson
Sunday – Jack Hylton’s Kit-Kat Band / Al Starita, v.

Segment 5: This Week in Recording History
The regular segment where we play rapidly rotating records celebrating birthdays, having been recorded this past week in years past.

You’re Burnin’ Me Up – The Tennessee Tooters (September 20, 1926)
Wherever You Are – Ben Selvin AHO / James Lewis, Franklyn Baur, Elliott Shaw, v.
(September 23, 1927)
Tiptoe Through The Tulips With Me – Annette Hanshaw
(September 20, 1929)
Sunshine – Garden Dancing Palace Orch/ Bill Doric, v.
(September 24, 1927)
