Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 15 August 2005

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll fulfill a couple of requests, visit some fields and streams, celebrate Boop Day and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Glory
Listener Alvin sent a nice e-mail a couple of weeks ago saying that he had been thinking about our flag, which, of course is sometimes referred to as “Old Glory”, and suggesting a set of “glory” songs.

Good Morning Glory – George Hall’s Taft Hotel Orch. / Loretta Lee
Glory – Gene Kardos AHO / Dick Robertson
I’m Riding to Glory – Picadilly Players

Segment 2: The Happiness Boys
I got another nice e-mail a couple of weeks ago from listener Paul, who listens each week with his daughter, who is just 15. It’s nice to know that some of my listeners are actually younger than the records I play. They requested something by Billy Jones and Ernest Hare, The Happiness Boys.

Pardon Me While I Laugh – The Happiness Boys
I Can’t Sleep in the Movies – The Happiness Boys
Billy Jones and Ernest Hare – The Happiness Boy
What? No Women? – Jones & Hare

Segment 3: Boop
August 8 in 1930, Paramount Studios released the animated cartoon “Dizzy Dishes”, which contained the first appearance of Betty Boop. So, at the suggestion of listener Jim, we’re going to celebrate Boop Day.

Betty Boop – Phil Spitalny’s Music
Boop-Boop-a-Doopa Trot – Spike Hughes and His Decca Dents
Betty Boop – Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees / Mae Questel

Segment 4: Field & Stream
August 14 in 1873, the first issue of “Field and Stream” magazine was published, so commemorating 132 years, here are some rapidly rotating records about fields and streams.

By a Rippling Stream – Johnny Hamp
Song from a cotton field – Bessie Brown
Beside a Lazy Stream – Frank Black AHO

Segment 5: This Week in Recording History
It’s here where we play rapidly rotating records celebrating birthdays, having been recorded this past week in years past.

Them Ramblin’ Blues – The Goofus Five (August 11, 1924)
Just a Dancing Sweetheart – Ray Noble and the New Mayfair Dance Orch/Al Bowlly
(August 14, 1931)
It Was So Beautiful – Harry Richman
(August 15, 1932)
It’s the Tune That Counts – Fats Waller and His Rhythm/Fats Waller
(August 10, 1939)
