Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 15 May 2005

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re gonna do some buying and selling, celebrate the birthdays of Jack Jenney, Billy Cotton and Red Nichols and listen to this past week in recording history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Commerce
Recently I purchased a replacement monitor amplifier for the studio and when it arrived, I quickly hooked it up with great anticipation. I was let down, however, when once channel began cutting in and out. I was beginning to think I had a third transaction going bad, but to make a fairly long story short, the seller, who could have easily ignored the issue with no consequence to him, did the right thing and paid for repair of the amp. It’s nice to know that there are still people with integrity on e-Bay, so here’s a set of songs about commerce

Mindin’ My Bus’ness – New Orleans Jazz Band
Selling That Stuff – McKinney’s Cotton Pickers
Buy American! – Ted Lewis and His Band/Ted Lewis

Segment 2: Jack Jenny
May 12 marked the birth in 1910 in Mason City, Iowa of Truman Elliot Jenney, better known as “Jack” Jenney (with thanks to regular listener Jim who pointed out in an e-mail that Jack Jenney’s birthday was coming up).

Old Fashioned Love – Red Norvo ah Swing Septet
Moonlight on the Ganges – Glenn Miller AHO / Smith Balew
That Old Feeling – Dick McDonough AHO / Howard Phillips

Segment 3: Red Nichols
May 8 marked the centennial of the birth in Ogden, Utah of Ernest Loring Nichols, better known as “Red” Nichols.

Look Who’s Here – Golden Gate Orch (Calif Ramblers)
Back Beats – Red Nichols and His Five Pennies
Nobody Knows – Red Nichols and His Five Pennies

May 6 marked the birth in 1899 in London, England of race car driver, pilot, yachtsman and most importantly, for more than 25 years, leader of one of the most popular bands in Britain from the early 19302, Billy Cotton.

The Music Goes Round and Round – Billy Cotton AHB / Teddy Foster & Ellis Jackson,
