Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 3 April 2005

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’re going to lounge around, listen to some charming music, celebrate the birthdays of Pops and Zez Confrey, and do the rhumba.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Loungers
If you live in the Long Beach or Signal Hill area of Southern California and are a subscriber to Charter Cable, then you have the great good fortune of being able to see yours truly on TV! Thanks to longtime faithful listener Ron, I was a guest on a quite eccentric program hosted by Glen Banks called “Uncle Glen’s Lounge Party”, and that program is airing each Saturday in April at 7 PM on Channel 3. So, if you’re in Long Beach, I hope you’ll tune in. The rest of you will just have to wait until Dave or Jay call to have me on their shows. Anyway, in celebration of the “Lounge Party”, here’s a set of rapidly rotating records by some loungers.

I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling – Willard Robison and His Levee Loungers
The Jazz Me Blues – Bert Lown and His Loungers
Any Time, Any Day, Anywhere – Chick Bullock and His Levee Loungers/ Chick Bullock, v.

Segment 2: Charming
Last week I received a very nice e-mail from listener Marty with a request for Music Hath Charms by Bing Crosby, which I’m pleased to fulfill as part of this next “charming” set of rapidly rotating records.

Music Hath Charms – Bing Crosby
The Snake Charmer – Jack Harris AHO / Dinah Miller, v.
What’s Keeping My Prince Charming? – Jack Payne ah BBC Dance Orch. / Billy Scott Comber
You’re so Darn Charming – Fats Waller and His Rhythm / Fats Waller, v.

Segment 3: Tuba
I received a very nice e-mail last week from new listener Ray who is retired from 40 years in broadcast television and who described himself as “an old tuba player”. I’ll take that to mean that Ray plays a tuba that is old, and here for listener Ray is a set of tuba songs.

When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba – Six Jumping Jacks / Tom Stacks ,v.
Snookum – Elgar’s Creole Orchestra
Goose Pimples – The Halfway House Dance Orchestra

Segment 4: Zez Confrey
April 3, marks the one hundred tenth anniversary of the birth in Peru, Illinois of pianist and composer Edward Elzear Confrey, better known as “Zez” Confrey.

Kitten on the Keys – Zez Confrey, Piano
Stumbling – Billy Murray
Dumbell – Zez Confrey AHO

Segment 5: Paul Whiteman
March 28 marked the birth in 1890 in Denver, Colorado, of Paul Whiteman.

C-O-N-S-T-A-N-T-I-N-O-P-L-E – Paul Whiteman AHO
Stumbling – Paul Whiteman AHO
So the Bluebirds and the Blackbirds Got Together – Paul Whiteman AHO / The Rhythm Boys
