Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 23 May 2004

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

This past week, May 21 marked the centennial birthday of Thomas Wright Waller, better known as “Fats”, and so this evening’s entire show is devoted to the music of Fats Waller.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: My First Fats
What better way to start this “All Fats” edition of “Rapidly Rotating Records” than with the first Fats Waller record I ever heard.

Handful of Keys
Tea for Two
Alligator Crawl

Segment 2: Organ
As a child Fats played the reed organ at his fathers outdoor religious services in Harlem, which led to a series of pipe organ recordings and a career included Fats on the organ.

Ain’t Misbehavin’
The Digah’s Stomp
Please Take Me Out of Jail

Segment 3: Fats The Composer
Fats also composed hundreds of songs, many unpublished, and many which he sold outright, receiving no royalties whatsoever. Here are three Fats Waller compositions, played by others.

Honeysuckle Rose – Frank Trumbauer AHO
Blue, Turning Grey Over You – Lee Morse and Her Blue Grass Boys
Anybody Here Want to Try My Cabbage? – McClennon’s Jazz Devils

Segment 4: Fats Waller and His Rhythm
“Fats Waller and His Rhythm” worked as a studio band, rarely knew in advance what they would be playing. However between 1934 and 42, the Fats Waller and His Rhythm recorded about 400 sides.

She’s Tall, She’s Tan, She’s Terrific
You’re The Cutest One (Archie Berdahl)
Hallelujah! Things Look Rosy Now

Segment 5: Other Groups
Here’s a set of rapidly rotating records featuring Fats playing in other groups.

Dallas Blues – Ted Lewis and His Band
I’d Love It – McKinney’s Cotton Pickers
That’s How I Feel Today – The Little Chocolate Dandies
