Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Frank Winegar, Tiny Parham and Samuel Colt, and have not one, but two vocabulary lessons.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Frank Winegar
February 27 marked the birth in 1901 in Grand Rapids, Michigan of Frank Winegar.

Shaking the Blues Away – Frank Winegar’s Penn Boys
I Call You Sugar – Frank Winegar’s Penn Boys
Imagination – Frank Winegar’s Penn Boys

Segment 2: Quotidian
As an educational public service, it’s time now for today’s vocabulary lesson. The word for today is “quotidian”, an adjective that means occurring every day, or belonging to each day, or commonplace or ordinary. But, the following songs with quotidian titles are anything but ordinary.

Every Day’s a Holiday in Dixie – Collins and Harlan
Every Days a Holiday – Fats Waller and His Rhythm
Each day – Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers

Segment 3: Tiny Parham
February 25 marked the birth in 1900 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada of pianist, composer and arranger Hartzell Strathdene Parham, better known as “Tiny” Parham.

19th Street Blues – Dodds and Parham
A Little Bit Closer – Tiny Parham and His Musicians
Doin’ the Jug-Jug – Tiny Parham and His Musicians

Segment 4: Surfeit
Tonight’s second word is surfeit, a noun, meaning an overabundant supply or excess, or excessive indulgence as in food and drink. Here’s a surfeit of things

Too Many Tears – Jimmie Greir Orchestra / Go Go Delyse, v.
Too Many Kisses in the summer – The California Ramblers / Irving Kaufman, v.
There’s Too Many Eyes – Ben Bernie and His Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra

Segment 5: Shooting
February 25 in 1836, Samuel Colt received a patent for his pistol which used a revolving cylinder containing powder and bullets in six individual tubes, which is the inspiration behind this shooting segment.

I’m Shooting High – Alice Faye
Pass Shoot Goal – Gracie Fields
Shooting High – Willie Lewis and His Entertainers
