Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going to take a midnight ride, have a vocabulary lesson, and celebrate a couple of birthdays.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Midnight
On April 18 in 1775 at about 10 P.M., three men took to their horses to ride from Boston to Concord, MA to warn the citizens of the approaching British army. So here, in honor of the midnight ride are some songs about midnight.

Swanee Shuffle – Midnight Airedailes
‘Long About Midnight – Frank Trumbauer’s Orchestra / Jack Teagarden
Half a Moon – Midnight Serenaders / Irving Kaufman

Segment 2: Pennies
April 14 in 1902, J. C. Penney opened his first store in Kemmerer, The store was founded on two principles: cash only, and “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, and as a matter of fact, the store was named “the Golden Rule Store.” So here to commemorate the first Penney’s store are some rapidly rotating records about…pennies.

Penny Serenade – Geraldo AHO
Five Pennies – Phil Napolean AHO
Pennies from Heaven – Carroll Gibbons / Harry Richman

Segment 3: Pukka
It’s time now for today’s vocabulary lesson. The word for today is pukka, an adjective meaning genuine, authentic or first-class, but it can connote someone who is overbearing and pretentious. So here’s a set of pukka songs.

Until the Real Thing Comes Along – Billy Merrin AH Commenders/Rita Williams
When the Real Thing Comes Your Way – Ray Noble New Mayfair
You’re a Real Sweetheart –
Roger Wolfe Kahn AHO /Frank Munn, v.

Segment 4: Katherine Faulkner Swift
April 19 marked the birth in 1897 in New York City of composer Katherine Faulkner Swift.

Can This Be Love? – The Travelers / Scrappy Lambert, v.
Fine and Dandy – Arden Ohman Orch/Frank Luther
Can’t We Be Friends? – Leo Reisman AHO/Lewis Conrad

Segment 5: Alex Hill
April 19 marked the birth in 1906 in Little Rock, Arkansas of composer, arranger, pianist and bandleader Alex Hill.

I’m Havin’ My Fun – Hokum Trio
Southbound – Alex Hill AHO
Ain’t it Nice? – Alex Hill and His Hollywood Sepians

Segment 5: Alex on Piano
…and I’m not quite through. Here’s Alex Hill once more. This one wasn’t written or arranged by Hill, or even performed by his band, but he does play piano.

Parkway Stomp – Albert Wynn and His Gut Bucket Five
