Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 17 November 2002

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’re going to celebrate the birthdays of Richard Whiting, Robert Fulton and the State of Washington. And you’ll find out Vincent J. Schaefer’s claim to fame.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Richard Whiting
November 12 marked the birth in 1891 in Peoria, Illinois of composer Richard Whiting. We could easily do an entire show of Richard Whiting songs, but we’re going to begin the show with three of them.

Beyond the Blue Horizon – Geo. Olsen
Double Trouble – Ray Noble AHO / The Freshmen
I’ll Be Blue, Just Thinking of You – Hit-of-the-Week Orchestra /Dick Robertson

Segment 2: Washington
Washington became the 42nd state on November 11 in 1889.

Rose of Washington Square – Red Nichols and His Five Pennies
Washington and Lee Swing – Johnny De Droit and the N. O. Jazz Ork
Soliloquy – The Washingtonians

Segment 3: Snow
November 13 in 1946, something was made for the very first time …artificial snow! So here to celebrate Vincent Schaefer’s invention, are some rapidly rotating records about snow.

Phoebe Snow – Ray Miller AHO
Snowy Morning Blues – James P. Johnson
I Must Have That Man – Valaida Snow
Singing in the Rain – Valaida Snow

Segment 4: Steamboats
November 14 marked the birth in 1765 of Robert Fulton. Often credited with inventing the steamboat, he actually just perfected the design. So here to commemorate the birth of Robert Fulton, are some rapidly rotating records about steamboats.

Steamboat Bill – Irving Kaufman
Blowin= Off Steam – New Orleans Owls
Steamboat Stomp – Jelly Roll Morton’s Red Hot Peppers

Segment 5: Richard Whiting
At the beginning of the show, I promised three more songs by Richard Whiting, and here they are.

You’re an Old Smoothie – Victor Young and His Serenaders / Lee Wiley/ Billy Hughes
Too Marvleous for Words – Bing Crosby
True Blue Lou – Ben Pollack/Scrappy Lambert
