Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 15 September 2002

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ve got some songs about the Golden State, we’ll have some beautiful songs, songs to fulfill your heart’s desire, we’ll hear from a couple of sailors and as they used to say on Rowan and Marin’s Laugh In, look that up in your Funk & Wagnall’s.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: California
September 9 was Admission Day in California, being admitted to the union as the 31st state on September 9, 1850.

California Blues – Abe Lyman’s California Ambassador Orch.

Segment 2: Hearts

Segment 4: Beautiful
September 10 in 1955, Bert Parks began as the host of the Miss America Pageant on NBC, and started the tradition of singing “There She Is, Miss America” to the newly crowned winner. I just happen to have a recording of “There She Is Miss America”. No no no! Don’t reach for that dial! Don’t worry. I’m NOT going to play it. I will however, play a trio of beauty songs.

Hello Beautiful – Nick Lucas
Bathing Beauty Blues – Charlie Straight’s Rendezvous Orchestra
A Beautiful Lady in Blue – Jan Garber

Segment 5: Words
September 10 marked the birth in 1839 in Clifton, Ohio of lexicographer and publisher Isaac Kauffman Funk–the Funk of Funk and Wagnall’s dictionary. So here to celebrate Isaac Funk’s birthday and his standard dictionary, are some songs about words.

Words – Bernie Cummins
Words Can’t Express the Way I Feel – McKinney’s Cotton Pickers
Big Broadcast of 1938 (You Took the Words Right Out of My Heart medley) – Carroll Gibbons and His Boyfriends
