Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 14 April 2002

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, a little later on we’re going to have breakfast, and we’ll have a quartet of songs by quartets.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: First Parentheses
For no particular reason other than I seem to have come across a lot of such songs lately, here are some songs which have parentheses in their titles.

(You’re Just a Great Big) Baby Doll – Ted Weems and His Orchestra / Thomas Parker Gibbs, v.
(Here We Are) Rollin’ in Love – Joe Morrison

(Step By Step, Mile By Mile) I’m Marching Home to You – Hal Kemp AHO / Arthur Fields, v.
(You Came Along) Just in Time – Billy Hays AHO

Segment 2: Quartet
April 11 in 1936, the SPEBSQSA was founded. That’s the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. She was opera singer, Adelina Patti. So to commemorate the SPEBSQSA, we have some songs by some quartets.

Down Among the Sheltering Palms – Lyric Quartet
Call Me Up Some Rainy Afternoon – Ada Jones and American Quartet

Bells of St. Mary’s – Peerless Quartet
Hail, Hail, The Gang’s All Here – Irving Kaufman-Columbia Quartet

Segment 3: Last Parenthesis
In the fist segment of the show we had a set of songs with parenthetic phrases at the beginning of their titles. This segment, we’ve got a set of songs with parenthetic phrases at the end of their titles.

Always in My Heart (Forever on my mind) – Isham Jones
Any Corner is a Cozy Corner (With a …) – Ted Weems and His Orchestra

Breeze (Blow My Baby Back to Me) – Clarence Williams AHO
Buy, Buy for Baby (Or Baby Will Bye Bye You – Ben Pollack and His Park Central Orchestra / Belle Mann, v.

Segment 4: Breakfast
Last week on April 11 in 1986, Kellogg’s of Battle Creek, MI stopped its 80 year tradition of conducting tours of its breakfast-food plant. You may not be able to tour the Kellogg’s breakfast cereal plant, but here’s a quick tour of some of the breakfast songs on the Rapidly Rotating Records playlist.

Breakfast Ball – Jimmie Lunceford and His Orchestra
Breakfast in Harlem – Buck & Bubbles
Can You Fry an Egg – Arthur Fields
