Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 27 January 2002

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’re going to have some laughs, we’ll celebrate the birthday of Jerome Kern, and if you’re very, very good, you might get a lollypop.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: William Everhardt Collection
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been playing some records given to me by Ella Mae Cox, from the collection of her late father William Everhardt, so here’s four more of them, starting off with a couple of indifferent songs.

Too Bad – Abe Lyman’s Calif. Orch
Who Cares? Selvin’s Boardwalk Orch.

Yankee Doodle Blues – Yerkes S. S. Flotilla Orchestra
Bee’s Knees – Emil Coleman and His Montmartre Orchestra

Segment 2: Laughing
January 22 in 1968, “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” debuted on NBC TV from “beautiful downtown Burbank”. So in honor of “Laugh-In”, as it was more commonly called, I’m going to sock it to you with some laughing songs.

Laughing Stomp – Vance Dixon and His Penvils
Laughing Rag – Roy Smeck

After My Laughter Came Tears – Bert Firman
You’re Laughing At Me – “Fats” Waller and His Rhythm

Segment 3: Jerome Kern
January 27 marks the birth in 1885 in New York of Jerome Kern, and here are just four of more than 700 songs from the pen of Jerome.

Sunny – Ipana Troubadors
Who – Claude Hopkins AHO

She Didn’t Say “Yes” – Ambrose and His Orchestra / Sam Browne, v.
Look for the Silver Lining – Edna Brown and Charles Harrison

Segment 4: Lollipops
January 21, marked the birth in 1921, of Aristotle Savalas. You know him better as Telly Savalas, the Emmy award winning actor who portrayed the lollypop sucking Lt. Theo Kojak in 115 episodes of the CBS police drama Kojak between October of 1973 and April of 1978. So here in honor of Telly Savalas and Kojak, are some musical lollipops.

Lollypop – Hunter & Jenkins
Good Ship Lollipop – Rudy Vallee
Lollypops – Harry Reser
