Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going to take a look at some things, we’re going to be cooking up some things, we’re going to try on some clothes, and we’ll celebrate the birthday of Gracie Fields.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Look
To get us started, this past week, January 9 in 1937, the first issue of “Look” magazine went on sale. So to commemorate Look magazine, here are some songs about looking.

Look at the World and Smile – Jean Goldkette and his orchestra
Lovely to Look At – Arthur Tracy
Look in the Mirror – Harry Reser and the Six Jumping Jacks
Look in the Looking Glass – Phil Hughes and His High Hatters

Segment 2: Cooking
January 7 in 1896, the first Fannie Farmer cookbook was published. Fannie Farmer became known as the “mother of level measurement.” So, here in honor of Fannie Farmer and her cook book, are some songs about cooking.

She Knows Her Onions – California Ramblers
Sugar Plum – George Olsen and His Music
Home Cooking – Eddie Condon AHO
Hot Jazz Pie – Joe Haymes AHO

Segment 3: Clothing
I received a great new suit from my wife for Christmas. Sadly I needed a new suit, because I couldn’t get in the old one any longer. But it has inspired some songs about various types of clothing.

Got a Brand New Suit – Tommy Dorsey / Elanor Powell, v.
Keep Your Undershirt On – Ben Pollack and His Park Central Orchestra / Scrappy Lambert, v.
Skirts – Slats Randall AHO
Spanish Shawl – The Georgia Melodians

Segment 4: Gracie Fields
January 9 in 1898, Grace Stansfield was born in Lancashire, England. You may know her better as Gracie Fields. Here are (three) from Gracie Fields.

Looking on the bright side – Ray Noble and His Orchestra / Gracie Fields, v.
Let’s all go posh – Gracie Fields
Laugh at life – Gracie Fields

Segment 5: Rapidly Rotating Records
I started playing a new version of our theme song a few weeks ago. Normally you only hear the first or last 28 seconds of the record, but we’ve got time to play it in full, and hear the several fine solos.

Avalon – Red Nichols and his Five Pennies
