Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 30 September 2001

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we have three birthdays to celebrate, all of which were on the same day of the year, September 26. And in answer to a request, the final segment of the show will be devoted to Gene Kardos.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Apples
We might as well do our birthday tributes in chronological order, where on September 26 all the way back in 1774, John Chapman was born in Massachusetts. You’ve probably heard of him by his nickname of “Johnny Appleseed”. So here to commemorate Johnny Appleseed are some songs about…apples.

Adam’s Apple – Jimmie Blythe and his Ragamuffins
The Big Apple – Hod Williams
Ida! Sweet as Apple Cider – Parker & Donaldson

Segment 2: Ted Weems
September 26 marked the birth in 1901 of Wilfred Theodore Weymes, better known as “Ted”.

Miss Annabelle Lee – Ted Weems AHO / Dusty Rhodes, Parker Gibbs, v.
Who Wouldn’t be Blue – Ted Weems and His Orchestra / Parker Gibbs, Art Jarrett, Sam Oliver, v.
My Cutie’s Due at two to two today – Ted Weems and His Orchestra
The One Man Band – Ted Weems and His Orchestra

Segment 3: Fitness
September 26 marked the birth in San Francisco in 1914 of Francois Henri La Lanne. You know him better as TV fitness guru Jack La Lanne. So here in commemoration are some songs about fitness.

Bend Down Sister – Jimmie Grier AHO
Fit as a Fiddle – Annette Hanshaw
Jog Along – Harry Leader / Sam Browne, v.
Dumbell – Zez Confrey AHO

Segment 4: Gene Kardos
I received an e-mail last week from listener Bill in Madison, Wisconsin, asking for some of Gene Kardos’ early recordings. Bill requested some early Gene Kardos recordings, so here are two from the band’s first session and one from the second.

Jig Time – Gene Kardos and His Orchestra
Left My Gal in the Mountains – Gene Kardos and His Orchestra
China Boy – Gene Kardos and His Orchestra
