Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 06 May 2001

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ve got some “royal” songs, and we’re going to celebrate a couple of birthdays.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Glory
The American novelist Betty Smith wrote, “Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time. Then your time on earth will be filled with glory.” And another American novelist, Eugene F. Ware, said, “All glory comes from daring to begin.” And so I’m going to dare to begin this glory filled edition of the show.

I’m Riding to Glory – Harry Reser (Cliquot Club Eskimos?)
When the Morning Glories Wake Up in the Morning – Wisconsin Roof Orchestra / Henry “Bubbles” Reeber, v.
Page Miss Glory- Rudy Vallee
Ain’t That A Grand and Glorious Feeling – Harry Richman

Segment 2: Royalty
April 30 in 1945, Jack Bailey first opened his Mutual radio network program by delivering the line, “How would YOU like to be Queen for a Day!” So, in commemoration here are some songs having to do with royalty in some form or another.

Prince of Wails – Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra
Hallucinations – Louisiana Rhythm Kings
Christopher Robin at Buckingham Palace – New Mayfair Ork
Coronation Waltz – Charlie Kunz

Segment 3: Bing Crosby
May 3 marked the birth in Tacoma, Washington in 1903 of Harry Lillis Crosby, better known as “Bing”, a nickname he got at age 6 as the result of his enthusiasm for “The Bingville Bugle”, a parody of a hillbilly newsletter written by Newton Newkirk, and run as a full-page feature in Spokane’s newspaper, the Spokesman-Review.

Boo Boo Boo – Bing Crosby, Arthur Johnson, Sam Coslow
If I Had You – Sam Lanin’s Famous Players and Singers
I’m in Love Again – Paul Whiteman AHO / Bing Crosby, v.
I’m Playing with Fire – Bing Crosby

Segment 4: Baby
The day before Bing Crosby was born, pediatrician, psychiatrist, author and activist Benjamin Spock was born in New Haven, CT. So here to commemorate Dr. Spock, not to be confused with Mr. Spock, are some “baby” songs.

Bashful Baby – Ben Pollack and his Park Central Orchestra
Baby – Paul Small
Oh Look at that Baby – Johnny Hamp’s Kentucky Serenaders
You’ll Recognize My Baby – George Belshaw’s KFAB Orch / Frank Sylvano, v.
