Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 1 April 2001

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ve got songs about a *very* important invention, we’ll be celebrating Paul Whiteman’s birthday, and we’ll have some songs about cake.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Spring
To get us started, it is now officially spring, and here to make that announcement musically are two spring songs.

Spring is Here – The Georgians
It Seems to be Spring – Happiness Boys

Segment 2: Cake
March 26 marked the birth in 1880 in Bowling Green Kentucky of Duncan Hines. As a hobby, Duncan Hines began compiling a book which he called “Adventures in Good Eating.” As a former grocery clerk, I most closely associate his name with cake mixes, so here to commemorate Duncan Hines, are a couple of songs about cake.

Let ‘em Eat Cake – Emil Coleman’s Riviera Orch
I Like Pie, I Like Cake – Bernie Cummins AHO

Segment 3: Pictures & Movies
March 26 in 1885, the first commercial motion picture film was produced in Rochester, NY. By Eastman Kodak. So here to commemorate Kodak’s motion picture film are some songs about pictures and movies.

Take Your Girlie to the Movies- Kay Kyser
You Ought to be in Pictures – Richard Himber AHO
If I Had a Talking Picture of You – Earl Burtnett and His Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel Orchestra
Ever Since the Movies Learned to Talk – Billy Murray

Segment 4: Alcohol
March 27 in 1860, M. L. Byrn of New York City patented a very important invention – the corkscrew. So here in honor of M. L. Byrn’s invention are some alcohol related songs.

Feelin’ No Pain – Red Nichols and Charleston Chasers
Happy Hour – Lloyd Scott’s Orch.
Pass the Jug – Frank Melrose
Hittin the Bottle – Ted Wallace and His Campus Boys

Segment 5: Paul Whiteman
March 28 marked the birth in 1890 in Denver, Colorado, of Paul Whiteman. He became famous in the 1920s as a pioneer of the “sweet band” style as opposed to traditional jazz. So here are four of my favorites from Paul Whiteman (and his orchestra), born 111 years and 4 days ago.

Whiteman Stomp
Felix the Cat
Dancing Tambourine
Charlestonette
