Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, in addition to some songs about exercise and apples, we’ll be featuring the music of Vincent Youmans.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Forever
First, we’re going to play a couple of “Forever” songs, including one having a birthday. The 72nd birthday of our first record, “Forever” by Ben Pollack AHO, recorded this very day, October 1, in 1928.

Forever – Ben Pollack and His Orchestra
Faithful Forever – Glenn Miller AHO

Segment 2: George Gershwin
September 26 marked the birth in Brooklyn NY in 1898 of Jacob Gershowitz. You know him better as George Gershwin. So here to commemorate the birth of George Gershwin

Swanee – Al Jolson
Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off – Harry Roy

Segment 3: Get Fit
September 26 marked the birth in San Francisco in 1914 of TV fitness guru Jack LaLanne. At age 45 he set a record of 23 push-ups in 1,033 minutes minutes on “You Asked For It”, hosted by Art Baker. In his honor, here’s some fitness inspiration.

Jumpin Jack – Campbell A. “Skeets” Tolbert and His Gentlemen of Swing
Fit as a Fiddle – Roger Wolfe Kahn AHO

I really like this next record and I’ve been eagerly awaiting the chance to work it into the show, and this “exercise” set is the perfect opportunity.
Bend Down Sister – Ben Selvin
Biceps Muscle & Brawn – George Formby

Segment 4: Vincent Youmans
Sept. 27, marked the birth in New York City in 1898 of Vincent Youmans, famous composer of popular songs throughout the 1920s and early 30s, most of which were written for Broadway musicals.

Sometimes I’m Happy – Roger Wolfe Kahn AHO
Rise and Shine – Paul Whiteman AHO
“I Know that You Know” – The Revelers
Great Day – Jack Hylton AHO

Segment 5: Apples
Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 26, 1774. His real name was John Chapman. “Johnny Appleseed” didn’t wander about aimlessly scattering apple seeds, as many people believe. He was a practical and professional nurseryman. He realized that there was a real need and an opportunity for service in supplying seeds and seedlings. So here to commemorate Johnny Appleseed are a couple of apple songs.

Old Apple Tree – Frank Crumit
In the shade of the old apple tree – The Mills Brothers

Segment 6: Double and Nothing
Last week on Sept. 29 in 1940 – “Double or Nothing”, a radio quiz show, was first heard on the Mutual Radio Network. So here to wrap up this edition of RRR is a “double” song and a “nothing” song.

Double Check Stomp – Duke Ellington
Nothing to do but love – Snooks Friedman and His Memphis Stompers
