Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 12 August 2001

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re gonna go round and round, we’ve got some songs about some real folks, and we’ll celebrate an appliance.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: From The Tips of Your Toes
August is National Foot Health Month. Foot health is especially important since we play toe-tapping music here on Rapidly Rotating Records and want to make sure your tootsies are nice and healthy. So, to commemorate Foot Health Month, here are some songs about pedal extremities.

Your Feet’s Too Big – Fats Waller and His Rhythm
Wiggle Yo Toes – QRS Boys
Slue Foot – Coon-Sanders Orchestra / Joe Sanders, Carleton Coon, v.
On Your Toes – Billy Cotton and his band / Alan Breeze, v.

Segment 2: Folks
August 6 in 1928 one of radio’s first serial dramas was heard as “Real Folks” debuted on NBC. So we’ve got some songs about some real folks.

Home Folks Blues – Bernie Cummins and His Toadstool Inn Orchestra
How’s Your Folks and My Folks – Dud Mecam’s Wolverines
Old Folks Rag – Van Eps Trio
Just Plain Folk – Norman Blair

Segment 3: Washboards
August 9 in 1910 A.J. Fisher of Chicago, IL, received a patent for the electric washing machine. Prior to Mr. Fisher’s invention you have used a washboard, which was also sometimes used as a musical instrument. So here are some examples, starting off with one of my favorite records.

Piggly Wiggly – Beale Street Washboard Band
Buddy Burton’s Jazz – Blythe’s Washboard Band
47th Street Stomp – Jimmy Bertrand’s Washboard Wizards
Top of the Town – Clarence Williams and His Washboard Band

Segment 4: Around and Around
Back in 1888, Theophilus Van Kannel of Philadelphia got a patent for…the revolving door. So here to commemorate Mr. Van Kannel’s invention, are some songs about going around.

I’m Walking Around in Circles – The Radiolites
Steppin’ Around – Jan Garber AHO
Hangin’ Around – Warner’s Seven Aces
