Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’re going to celebrate the birthdays of Gracie Fields, Sophie Tucker, Russ Columbo and we’re going to LOOK back in history.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Look, Look what you’ve done – Ben Selvin AHO / Eddie Cantor, v.

The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945. On January 9 in 1951, The United Nations headquarters officially opened in New York City. So here to commemorate the UN moving in to their new digs in New York are some songs about some member nations of the UN.

Segment 3: Vocal Birthdays
Several of our favorite vocalists had birthdays during this past week.

January 14 in 1908 Eugenio Ruggerio de Rudolpho Columbo was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. You know him better as Russ Columbo. His brief career came to an end when he and a friend, Lansing V. Brown Jnr., were handling a pair of antique duelling pistols and Columbo was shot in the head and died on September 2, 1934 at age 26.
Auf Weidersehn, My Dear – Russ Columbo

January 9 in 1898, Grace Stansfield was born in Lancashire, England. You know her better as Gracie Fields. Gracie Fields died on September 27, 1979 on the Isle of Capri, but not before she was made Dame Commander of the British Empire.
Singing in the Bathtub – Gracie Fields

January 13, in 1884, Sonia Kalish-Abuza was born. You know her better as The Last of the Red Hot Mamas, Sophie Tucker. During World War I, Tucker became known as ‘The Queen Of Jazz.
My Pet – Sophie Tucker
Is He My Boyfriend – Sophie Tucker

Segment 4: Today
January 14 is an historic day in the life of television. At 7 AM on January 14, 1952NBC began a broadcast with a shot of Dave Garroway looking outside from the NBC studio in New York through what was known as the ‘Window on the World’. The program was “Today”, and it’s still going strong after nearly 50 years. So here to commemorate Today, are some songs about Today,

Give me today – California Ramblers / Arthur Hall, v.
Take your tomorrow and give me today – Jackson and his Southern Stompers
Today I feel so happy – Percival Mackey and His Kit-Cat Band
Today’s a sunny day for me – Lloyd Shakespeare Band
