Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 15 December 2002

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ll have some songs about time, songs about paradise, and we’ll celebrate several birthdays.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Time
December 9 in 1940, the Longines Watch Company signed the first contract for advertising on FM radio, with experimental station W2XOR in New York City. The ads ran for 26 weeks and promoted the Longines time signals. So to commemorate the Longines time signals, here are some songs about time.

You Came Along Just in Time – Billy Hays AHO/Andrew Stanton
Blue Again – Benrus Radio Orch
I’m Watching the Clock – King Oliver

Segment 2: Paradise
December 9 marked the birth in London way back in 1608 of John Milton, considered by many to be the greatest English poet behind Shakespeare. His epic poem Paradise Lost is considered to be Milton’s masterpiece and one of the greatest poems in world literature. So here to commemorate John Milton’s poem are some rapidly rotating records about paradise.

Paradise – Frankie Reynolds AHO
Bird of Paradise – Jimmie Lunceford
Trouble in Paradise – Ray Noble/Al Bowlly

Segment 3: Hobo’s
December 9 marked the birth in 1898 in Sedan, Kansas of Emmett Kelly. The circus was Emmett’s first love, but he also performed on Broadway, television and in movies. So to commemorate Emmett Kelly, I have some rapidly rotating records about hobos, but having hopped a few freight trains myself, I want to point out the distinction between hobos, tramps and bums. Hobos are not beggars. A true hobo insists upon working for what he gets, and uses the rails to travel from place to place.

Singing a Vagabond Song – Ted Lewis
Hobo’s Prayer – Charley Straight
Hobo’s Blues – Wilf Carter “Montana Slim”

Segment 4: Freddy Martin
December 9 marked the birth in 1906 in Cleveland, Ohio, of drummer, tenor saxophonist and bandleader Freddy Martin.

Remember My Forgotten Man – Freddy Martin
Stars fell on Alamaba – Freddy Martin AHO / Buddy Clark
Then I’ll Be Tired of You – Freddy Martin AHO/Elmer Feldkamp

Segment 5: Books
December 10 marked the birth in 1851 in Adams Center, New York, of Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey. You know him as the inventor of the DDC, the Dewey Decimal Classification system. So here in honor of Melvil Dewey, are some rapidly rotating records about books.

Story Book Ball – Dixie Rhythm Kings
Send for Our Free booklet – Harry Reser’s Six Jumping Jacks
Dew-Dew-Dewy Day – Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra
