Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ve got some very fashionable, as well as some beautiful songs.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Fashionable
October 10 in 1886, Griswold Lorillard, shocked the other guests by wearing a dress coat which had been tailored in England, and had scarlet satin lapels and no tails. The rest is fashion history. So to commemorate the tuxedo, we have some very “fashion”able songs.

Original Tuxedo Rag – Oscar “Papa” Celestin and The Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra
I Miss My Swiss, My Swiss Miss Misses Me – Harry Reser and The Tuxedo Orchestra / Irving Kaufman, Jack Kaufman, v.
I’m All Dressed Up With a Broken Heart – Ted Lewis AHO
Puttin’ on the Ritz – Jan Garber AHO / Maxwell Covert, v.

Segment 2: Beautiful
October 11 marked the birth in 1906 of Charles Revson, founder of the Revlon Company. So, in celebration of National Cosmetology Month, here’s a set of beautiful songs.

Beauty Must be Loved – Dick Powell
Beautiful – Jack Crawford AHO
Hello Beautiful – Sam Lanin’s Dance Orchestra / Paul Small, v.
Beautiful Girl – Bing Crosby
Freckle Face, You’re Beautiful – Ben Pollack AHO / Joe Harris, v.

Segment 3: Columbus Day
October 12, was Columbus Day on which day in 1492, Italian born Christopher Columbus, sailing for Queen Isabel of Spain, landed with his 3 ships and a crew of 90 on what is now Guanahani Island in the Bahamas. So here is a segment paying tribute to Columbus.

Christopher Columbus – Fats Waller
I’m sailing on a sunbeam – Paul Specht AHO
We Saw the Sea – Henry Hall and the new BBC Dance Orchestra / Dan Donovan, v,
How Deep is the Ocean – Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees

Segment 4: 57 Varieties
October 11, marked the birth in 1844 of H. J. Heinz. In 1896 he decided that his own products were not styles, but varieties, and he adopted the slogan 57 Varieties. There were many more than 57 foods in production at the time but the numbers 5 and 7 held some special significance for Heinz and his wife. So here in honor of Henry John Heinz is Earl Hines.

57 Varieties – Earl Heins

Segment 5: His and Hers
We’re going to wrap up this edition of RRR with a little segment we’re calling “His and Hers”. Iwas going to call it “Compare and Contrast”, but Rich Conaty beat me to it. Anyway, the idea is to play the same song by both a male and female vocalist.

Because My Baby Don’t Mean Maybe Now – Ruth Etting
Because My Baby Don’t Mean Maybe Now – Bing Crosby
