Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 18 March 2001

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, among other things, you’re going to get an “earful” of music, and a little later on, we’re going to have a boycott.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Sams
March 13 was Uncle Sam Day! On that day back in 1852, the New York “Lantern” newspaper published an Uncle Sam cartoon for the first time. So here, are some songs about some other sam’s.

Collegiate Sam – Harry Reser’s Syncopators
Sam the Vegetable Man – Stuff Smith and His Onyx Club Boys

True Blue Sam – Zez Confrey AHO
Everybody’s Talkin’ About Sammy – Sam Morgan’s Jazz Band

Segment 2: Rent & Boycotts
March 12 marked the birth in 1832 of Charles Boycott, a wealthy Irish landowner who in 1880 refused to lower the rent he charged in compliance with new land reform laws. In response Charles C. Boycott suddenly found himself unable to keep his servants or even to buy food. So, for all the landlords and tenants out there, we’ve got some songs about rent.

House Rent Rag – Dixieland Jug Blowers
Raising the Rent – Ramona and Roy Bargy

House Rent Party Day – Harlem Hot Shots

Segment 3: Ears
Mr. Greenwood’s ears must have gotten cold during the winter of 1877, for it was on March 13 of that year that Chester Greenwood received a patent for….the earmuff. So here to commemorate Mr. Greenwood’s invention, are some songs about….ears.

Cheerful Little Earful – High Hatters / Johnny Marvin, v.
Were Your Ears Burning Baby – Ruth Etting
Tin Ear – Jan Garber
Cheerful Little Earful – Vincent Lopez AHO / Smith Ballew, v.

Segment 4: Girl Friends
March 17 in 1926, “The Girl Friend” opened at the Vanderbilt Theatre in New York. So to commemorate “The Girl Friend”, tonight we’ve got some songs about girl friends.

The Girl Friend – Frank Crumit
The Girlfriend of a Boyfriend of Mine – Ted Weems AHO
Is She My Girlfriend? – Coon-Sanders
The Girlfriend – George Olsen and His Music
