Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 22 May 2011 (part 1)

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

Tonight we’re live right here in the KISL studio in the greenhouse in Avalon Park, and for the next two hours, we’re gonna do some wandering, celebrate the birthdays of Grant Clarke, Fats Waller and Henry Busse, play some wrap music, play some records for no particular reason whatsoever, and for the last two segments of the show we’re just gonna go wild. And who knows what else may happen.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Perigrinate
If you were listening to the show about 3 years ago, you’ll remember that we did a segment on wandering inspired by the vocabulary word PERIGRINATE, an intransitive verb meaning to wander from place to place, especially on foot. Well this week, we’re going to do some more perigrinating

Wandering In Dreamland – Ted Lewis and His Band
Wanderin’ – Vernon Dalhart
Like The Wandering Minstrel (w) – The Cavaliers (Ben Selvin) / Williams A. Kennedy, v.
Wandering On To Avalon – Regent Dance Orchestra / Tom Barratt, v.

Segment 2: Henry Busse
May 19 marked the birth in Magdeburg, Germany in 1894 of Henry Busse.

The Monkey Doodle-Doo – Busse’s Buzzards
One Step To Heaven – Henry Busse Orch / The Four Recorders, v.
Mary Jane – HBO / Richard Barry – Tony Mastroni / Don Borden, v.
Milenberg Joys – Busse’s Buzzards

Segment 3: Grant Clarke
May 14 marked the birth in 1891 in Akron, Ohio, of lyricist Grant Clarke. He wrote more than 100 songs, including these:

Wishing And Waiting For Love – Nat Shilkret and Victor Orch / Belle Mann, v.
Let Me Have My Dreams – Alfredo and His Band / Les Allen, Eddie Grossbart, Hal Swain
Am I Blue? – The New Englanders / Annette Hanshaw, v.
Nobody Cares If I’m Blue – Ted Wallace AHO / Elmer Feldkamp & Unknown, v.

Segment 4: Some Raps
I like to think I have fairly eclectic musical tastes, but I’m going to make no apology for the fact that I have no use whatsoever for modern rap music. Vintage “wrap” music, however, is a completely different thing.

Symphonic Raps – Carroll Dickerson’s Savoyagers
Wrappin’ It Up – Fletcher Henderson AHO
Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams – Mildred Bailey
I Wanna Wrap You Up – Blue Barrron AHO
