Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show we’ve got songs by Harry Ruby and Jerome Kern, we’re going to ask some questions, and celebrate the birthday of a record by the Jean Goldkette band.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Xanthochroid
I learned a new word the other day: xanthochroid. I happen to be married to a xanthochroid – a blond-haired, blue-eyed person with fair skin. So here’s a set of songs about xanthochroids, well at least about some people with blue eyes.

What a Blue-Eyed Baby You Are – Elvin J. McInelli and His Orchestra / Billy Murray, v.
Two Little Blue Little Eyes
I’m Tickled Pink with a Blue Eyed Baby – Fred Rich / Smith Ballew, v.
That Blue-Eyed Baby from Memphis – Den Redman AHO / Harlan Lattimore, v.

Segment 2: Questioning
January 24 marked the birth in 1915 of TV game show producer Mark Goodson, who, along with Bill Todman, produced shows including What’s My Line, I’ve Got a Secret, Family Feud and The Price is Right. So here to commemorate Mssrs. Goodson and Todman, is a set of songs whose titles are questions.

What Kind of Rhythm is That? – Bill Brown and His Brownies
What Kind of a Noise Annoys an Oyster – Frank Crumit
Who Made Little Boy Blue – Henry Hall and the New BBC Dance Orchestra
Why? – Ben Selvin AHO / The Rollickers, v.

Segment 3: Jerome Kern
January 27 marked the birth in 1885 in New York City of Jerome Kern, to celebrate, here are two songs from Jerome Kern.

A Fine Romance – Johnny Green and His Orchestra / Fred Astaire, v.
The Folks Who Live on the Hill – John Scott Trotter AHO / Bing Crosby, v.

Segment 4: Harry Ruby
Ten years to the day after Jerome Kern, songwriter Harry Ruby was born, also in New York City. Here is a pair of Harry Ruby songs.

I Wanna Be Loved BY You – The Broadway Nitelites / Vaughn DeLeath, v.
Three Little Words – Frank Brown and His Tooters / Irving Mills, v.

Segment 5: Eskimo
The Eskimo Pie ice cream confection was patented this past week on January 24 in 1922, by Christian K. Nelson of Onawa, Iowa. And while I finish this up, I just happen to have a couple of songs by some Eskimos. The Cliquot Club Eskimos, that is.

My One and Only – Harry Reser’s Cliquot Club Eskimos
At Sundown – Harry Reser’s Cliquot Club Eskimos

Segment 6: Birthday Clover
We have another birthday to celebrate on this evening’s show. The birthday of this next record, which is 74 years old today.

I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover – Jean Goldkette and His Orchestra / Bix Beiderbecke, Joe Venuti,
