Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evenings show we’re going to be looking back at some events this past week in history, we’ve got some underground songs, some international songs, songs about cans, matches, and even a couple of songs for Halloween

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Cans
October 23 was marked the birth in 1750 of Nicolas Appert in Chalons-Sur-Marne, France. In 1795, the French government offered a price of 12,000 francs for a method of preserving food. Appert, already an experienced chef, got to work at his shop near Paris and developed his method, which involved cooking foods in corked jars. So here to commemorate Nicolas Appert are a couple of songs about cans.

Stick Out Your Can – Harlem Hamfats
Sittin’ on a Rubbish Can – Julia Gerity and her Play Boys

I can play a couple more can songs, and I will.
How Can I? – Fats Waller
What More Can I Ask – Al Bowlly

Segment 2: International Songs
October 24 in 1945, the United Nations charter took effect the San Francisco Conference. So here, to commemorate United Nations Day, are some international songs.

On October 24 in 1936, Alonzo D. Phillips of Springfield, Massachusetts received a patent for the phosphorous friction safety match. Alonzo didn’t invent matches by any means. That had been done back as far as 1680. But here to commemorate Mr. Phillips’ improvement to the match, are a couple of striking examples of fine musicianship,
