Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 30 July 2000

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

Life, is comprised of a series of highs and lows, peaks and valleys. We’re calling this particular edition of Rapidly Rotating Records “Peaks and Valleys”. We’ve got songs about mountains and high places, and songs not about valleys, but rather, songs BY Vallee.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Rudy Vallee
Here to start us off is Rudy Vallee, whose birthday was the day before yesterday, July 28th. He would have been 99.

My Time is Your Time – Rudy Vallee
Sing for Your Supper – Rudy Vallee

Segment 2: High Mountains
We promised, peaks as well as valleys, so lets climb high mountains.

Rocky Mountain Blues – Fletcher Henderson AHO
High and Dry – Irving Mills and His Hotsy Totsy Gang

Segment 3: Rudy Clarinet or Sax
In 1919, Rudy Vallee first began self study of the clarinet, but after hearing a recording by saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft, he switched to that instrument. After practicing 6 to 8 hours a day for about a year, he was able to play publicly on the stage of Portland Maine’s Strand Theater.

You Try Somebody Else – Rudy Vallee with his Connecticut Yankees
Orchids in the Moonlight – Rudy Vallee

Segment 4: Hilltops
Back up to the peaks now, well, hilltops, anyway

High Up on a Hilltop – Annette Hanshaw
I’m Sitting High on a Hilltop – Victor Young and the Orchestra / Dick Powell

Segment 5: AKA Hubert Vallee
Rudy Vallee was born Hubert Prior Vallee on July 28, 1901 in Island Point, Vermont. Rudy Vallee himself didn’t change his name from Hubert to Rudy. In the fall of 1921, he entered the Univ. of Maine and joined the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, where fellow fraternity members, knowing of his great love of Rudy Wiedoeft’s playing, nick-named him ‘Rudy’ Vallee.

Reminiscing – Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees
You’re Driving Me Crazy – Rudy Vallee

Segment 5: To The Peaks
Now we’re going to back up to the peaks

When it’s Springtime in the Rockies – Ben Selvin AHO
Mountain Greenery – Pauline Alpert

Segment 5: Mega Vallee
It was while playing with the Yale Collegians, that Rudy Vallee took to using a megaphone to enhance his slight voice. The megaphone became one of his trademarks, and was copied by other vocalists of the day inasmuch as microphones and amplifier systems were not yet well developed.

You Ought to Be in Pictures – Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees.
I’m Just a Vagabond Lover – Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees

Segment 5: Low Mountains
We’re going to finish up this “Peaks and Valleys” edition of the show with a couple more “mountain” songs.

Left My Gal in the Mountains – Gene Kardos
High and Low – Ambrose AHO
