Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ve got some songs about nature’s confectioner, we’ll dance to the Charleston, we’re going to celebrate the birthday of “Banjo Eyes”, and everything we say will be the truth.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Bees
January 31 in 1936, the radio show, “The Green Hornet” was introduced by its famous theme song, “The Flight of the Bumble Bee” on WXYZ radio, in Detroit, MI. Now, I don’t have any songs about hornets, green or otherwise, but I do have some bee songs, and since the theme song of the Green Hornet was “flight of the bumblebee”…well, you get the idea.

I’m Gonna Let the Bumble Bee Be – Harry Reser’s Six Jumping Jacks
Tellin’ the Birds, Tellin’ the Bees – “Whispering” Jack Smith
The Bee Song – Arthur Askey
When the Bees Make Honey Down in Sunny Alabam’ – Jack Kaufman and Irving Kaufman

Segment 2: Charleston
Seventy-five years ago today, John Giola of NYC decided to set a worlds record. With the Charleston dance craze sweeping the nation, John decided to see how long he could Charleston. So here to commemorate Mr. Giola’s feat, er…accomplishment, is about 12 minutes worth of Charleston songs.

The Original Charleston – The Original Dixieland Jazz Band
Charleston Chuckles – Zez Confrey AHO
I’m Gonna Charleston Back to Charleston – Coon Sanders Original Night Hawk Orchestra
Charleston Ball – Cotton Club Orchestra

Segment 3: Eddie Cantor
January 31 marked the birth in 1892 in New York’s lower east side of Israel Isskowitz. You know him better as Eddie Cantor.

Cheer Up – Phil Spitalny’s Music / Eddie Cantor
Mandy – Eddie Cantor
Hello Sunshine, Hello – Leonard Joy and The Victor Orchestra / Eddie Cantor

Segment 4: Lies
February 2 in 1935, Leonard Keeler of Partage, WI, conducted a test of his machine, the polygraph. So here are some songs about lies, starting off with “His ‘n’ Hers” renditions.

It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie – Ruth Etting
It’s a Sin to tell a lie – Fats Waller
I Can’t Believe It’s True – Isham Jones AHO / Eddie Stone, v.
Nobody Lied – Broadway Dance Orchestra
