Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 4 March 2001

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’re going to get closer to fulfilling a request, we’re going to take a honeymoon, look at people, take a walk down the street, and make a quick trip to Baltimore and Ohio.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Honeymoon
February 26 marked the birth in 1916 of Herbert John Gleason. You know him better as Jackie Gleason, bus driver Ralph Kramden in “The Honeymooners”. So here, in honor of Jackie Gleason, are some honeymoon songs.

Shanghai Honeymoon – Al Turk’s Orchestra
Honeymoon Hotel – Leo Reisman AHO
Sky High Honeymoon – Charlie Kunz / Vera Lynn, v.
Under the Honey Moon – Coney Island Jazz Band

Segment 2: People
February 27, a new magazine was issued by Time-Life. The magazine was “People”. So here to acknowledge People magazine are some songs about…that’s right….people

Crazy People – The Californians / Cliff Edwards
Two Sleepy People – Ella Logan and Hoagy Carmichael
Two Lovely People – Brian Lawrance and His Lansdowne Orchestra
The People Upstairs – The Western Bros.

Segment 3: Sunny Side
February 28 way back in 1930, Ted Lewis and his orchestra recorded “On the Sunny Side of the Street”. Ted served as vocalist as well, on the tune that has been recorded hundreds of times and is an American music standard, so here’s a sunny side of the street set.

On the Sunny Side of the Street – Ted Lewis AHO
On the Sunny Side of the Street – Grace Hayes
Down Sunnyside Lane – Jack Payne and The BBC Dance Orchestra / Billy Scott-Coomber, v.
Over on the Sunny Side – Roy Fox

Segment 4: Baltimore & Ohio
February 28 in 1827, The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad became the first railroad incorporated for the commercial transportation of people and freight. So here are a couple of songs about B & O, to commemorate *the* B&O.

Baltimore – Jack Crawford
The Baltimore – Frankie Trumbauer
My Old Ohio Home – Jean Goldkette
I Couldn’t Get to It in Time – Harold Ortli and His Ohio State Collegians

Segment 5: Beach Request
Listener Fred requested a song which I still can’t accommodate, but I can at least now play a record by Henny Hendrickson’s Louisville Serenaders. It’s not exactly beach weather out there, but here’s On the Beach With You.

On the Beach with You. – Henny Hendrickson’s Louisville Serenaders
