Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 4 October 2009

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ll hear some sweet music, fulfill a request, get taught a thing or two and celebrate the birthdays of Frank Banta and Cliff Friend.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Sweet

That’s What I Call Sweet Music – Jim Kelleher ah Piccailly Band / Unidentified, v.
Sweet Music – Fletcher Henderson ah Connie’s Inn Orch / Dick Robertson, v.
Sweet Music Man – Nat Gonella and His Georgians / Nat Gonella, v.
Soft Lights and Sweet Music – Chick Bullock

Segment 2: Blue Grass
A couple of weeks ago I had a listener write and ask if I had any information on bandleader David H. Silverman. Unfortunately, all I know about David H. Silverman is that he played piano in Gene Rodemich’s orchestra, and Silverman’s band was resident at the Hotel Jefferson in St. Louis. They recorded 6 sides for Victor in two sessions in St. Louis, with Nat Shilkret playing drums. Not the Victor Musical Director Nat Shilkret that we hear quite often on this show, but a relative of his.

Blue Grass Blues – David H. Silverman Orch
Blue Grass – Meyer Davis Orchestra / Unidentified v.
I’ve Got The Blues For The Blue Grass Down In Kentucky – Arthur Fields and Fred Hall

Segment 3: Teach Me
Listener Cleon suggested a set of songs for all the teachers out there, so celebrating all that our teachers do for us…

Teach Me To Smile – Manhattan Dance Makers
Apple for the Teacher – Nick Lucas
Teach Me To Dance Like Grandma – Ray Starita and His Ambassadors’ Band / Les Reis, v.

September 28 marked the birth in 1897 in New York City of pianist Frank Edgar Banta.

What Do We Do On A Dew-Dew-Dewey Day? – Frank Banta
Upright And Grand – Jenkins And Johnson
Looking At The World Through Rose-Colored Glasses – Frank Banta, Piano / Arthur Hall, v.

Segment 5: Cliff Friend
October 1 marked the birth in 1893 in Cincinnati, Ohio of composer, lyricist and pianist Cliff Friend.
