Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ve got some “good things”, we’re going to celebrate the birth of Louis Armstrong, and we’ll have some songs about Dr. Benjamin Ordway.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Fifth Ave
August 2 in 1824, one of the most famous thoroughfares in the world, Fifth Avenue in New York city was opened. So here is a song in commemoration of that event.

The Lady from Fifth Avenue – Hod Williams AHO

Segment 2: Astronomical
August 1, marked the birth in 1818 in Massachusetts of Maria Mitchell, who was the first acknowledged female astronomer in the United States. She discovered a comet in 1847, became the first woman member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1948, and was professor of astronomy at Vassar from 1865 to 1888. So here in honor of Maria Mitchell, are some astronomical songs.

Nothin on My Mind – Ted Weems and His Orchestra
Stars in my eyes – Dick McDonough AHO
When the Dixie Stars Play Peek-a-Boo – Bernie Cummins AHO

Segment 3: Forgetting
August 4 marked the debut in 1940 of the CBS radio program “Crime Doctor”. The show’s main character was Dr. Benjamin Ordway, who used to be a criminal, but who got hit on the head, developed amnesia, and suddenly began to work as a crime fighter. Since Dr. Ordway had amnesia, we’ve got some songs about forgetting.

Forgetting You – Jean Goldkette AHO
Forgetful Blues – Charley Straight’s Rendezvous Orchestra
Why Have You Forgotten Waikiki – Ben Selvin AHO
Can I forget you – John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra / Bing Crosby

Segment 4: Good Things
August 3 marked the birth in 1941 of Martha Stewart. Martha Stewart was named one of the “50 Most Powerful Women” by Fortune magazine in October 1998, as well as one of “America’s 25 Most Influential People” by Time magazine in June 1996. So here in honor of Martha Stewart, are some “good things”.

My stove’s in good condition – Lil Johnson
Good Feelin’ Blues – Zack Whyte and his Chocolate Beau Brummels
Too Good to be True – Benny Goodman Trio / Helen Ward, v.
Goody Goody – Lou Preager and His Romano’s Restaurant Dance Orchestra

Segment 5: Sound-on-Film
August 2 in 1926 marked the first demonstration of the Vitaphone system, which synchronized projected film images with sound recorded on a phonograph record. I have here a portion of the soundtrack from a 1935 sound-on-film Vitaphone.

Soft Drinks and Sweet Music – Georgie Price and Sylvia Froos

Segment 5: Louis Armstrong
August 4th marked the birth in 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana of Louis Daniel Armstrong.
