Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 7 February 2010

Rapidly Rotating Records Logo

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

On this evening’s show, we’ll have some heavenly songs, some amphibious songs, we’ll kick some things around, and do some follow up to our show last week with Bryan Wright.

Enjoy the show!

Here’s the complete playlist:

Segment 1: Litoria Peronii
Listener Ernie in Palos Verdes, California sent in a suggestion for a segment, well, actually more of a challenge. So here for listener Ernie, in an effort to elevate the level of erudition characterizing this broadcast, is a set of rapidly rotating records about the species Litoria peronii.

The Frog Song – Vernon Dalhart & Adelyne Hood
Bull Frog Blues – Six Brown Brothers
Horny Frog – Big Bill Broonzy
Big Frog – Leon Kartun Orchestra

Segment 2: Heaven
The final concert in the Wurlitzer Week-end series of theater organ concerts a couple of weeks ago was Ron Rhode playing the mighty Wurlitzer at the Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo. One of the selections he played was “Isn’t It Heavenly”, and I thought, there’s a segment for the show. So, here’s a set of heavenly songs.

Isn’t It Heavenly – Joe Venuti’s Blue Five / Unidentified Male Vocal, v.
My Idea Of Heaven – Annette Hanshaw
You’re A Heavenly Thing – Bill Barry AHO

Segment 3: Happy Jazz Days
I want to thank Bryan Wright once again for being our special guest on last week’s show, and if you heard it, you remember that we played some contemporary recordings by Bryan and the West End Jazz Band of some vintage songs. Well here are some vintage recordings of a couple of those songs. If you heard last week’s show, listen closely to the last record in this set. It’s quite a coincidence.

Tozo! Last week by WEJB – Fletcher Henderson / Don Redman, v.
There’s A Rainbow Round My Shoulder – All Star Orchestra
I Don’t Want To Get Well (Harry Jentes) – Eddie Cantor
Sleep Baby Sleep – George P. Watson

Segment 4: Kickin
I had a request a couple of weeks back for “They Gotta Quit Kickin’ My Dog Around”. I’m afraid I don’t have that, and we’re certainly not advocating violence on this show, but I do have some rapidly rotating records about kicking some other things, beginning with the Ipana Troubadors.

Kickin’ A Hole In The Sky – Ipana Troubadors
They Kicked The Devil Out Of Heaven – Grand Central Red Cap Quartet
Kickin’ The Cat – Joe Venuti’s Blue Four

Segment 5: Bryan Wright’s Collection
Last week’s show consisted of all tracks from Rivermont Records CDs. I had planned to include a segment featuring some records from Bryan Wright’s personal collection, but we ran out of time. So, I’m going to play them now.

Chickie (Mills) – Nathan Glantz AHO
Meadow-Lark – Imperial D O (Adrian Schubert) / Irving Kaufman w , v.
Trudy – Fred Rich ah Hotel Astor Orch / Ray Stillwell, v.
