Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show February 21, 2021

Lounging at the Waldorf Fats Waller

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

Every once in a while I like to throw out the phrase, “I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong” in a conversation, just to mess with people. Well, as it turns out, I actually did make a mistake on last week’s show. So the introduction to this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records starts off with an admission and correction. But once that’s been taken care of, in the first segment of the show we’ll celebrate Johnny Dunn’s birthday. Unfortunately I’ve never been to The Waldorf. The Waldorf is, of course, The Waldorf Astoria Hotel New York and you’ll hear some of the history of the hotel in this week’s show. Actually hotels, plural, since they started out as completely separate hotels. And we’ll hear some songs about The Waldorf, including the record above by our old friend Fats Waller. In the second segment we’ll have some songs about pavo cristatus (peacocks). You thought recording only went back to the late 1800s, but we’ll hear a recording from deep within the RRR archives from all the way back in 1776 of a conversation between Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson about some of Franklin’s “wise sayings.” Here at Rapidly Rotating Records we try to adhere to the wise saying to “Say what you mean and mean what you say!” so we’ll play some records asking “Did you mean it?”  Last week we heard “Muddlin’ Thro'” written by Howard Flynn and in the final segment of the show we’ll hear a couple more compositions by Howard Flynn. There’s lots of great music, interesting information and even perhaps a chuckle or two, so set aside an hour to relax over your favorite beverage and be taken back in time to a different musical era.

ENJOY THE SHOW!

I hope you are all safe and healthy and doing as well as you can be given the current world situation and stay-at-home orders and that this hour of music gives you a bit of diversion and entertainment. Thanks for listening and best wishes!
